House Rules: How Pre-Check Acknowledgements Protect Hosts and Set Expectations

Guests miss house rules all the time. They skim guidebooks, overlook messages, or only realize a policy exists after check-in, when it’s already too late. When issues happen, hosts are left handling disputes without a clear record of what was acknowledged.

House Rules Pre-Check changes that by requiring guests to actively review and accept rules before arrival. It creates clear expectations, blocks incomplete check-ins, and produces a verifiable completion trail tied to each reservation should the unexpected conflict come up.

What the Feature Does

House Rules Pre-Check is a required step in the guest onboarding flow. Guests must complete it before moving forward.

Rule-by-rule acceptance

House rules are presented one at a time. Guests must explicitly accept each rule before advancing to the next.

No skipping allowed

House rules cannot be skipped. If a guest exits early, they are redirected back until completion.

Final attestation with typed name

After accepting all rules, guests complete a final attestation step and type their name to confirm agreement.

Required electronic consent

Guests must accept electronic records and signature consent before submission. The consent text version shown is stored.

Progress tracking and resumability

Partial progress is saved. Guests can resume later using their guidebook link.

Completion gating

Guests who have not completed house rules are redirected back to the pre-check flow. Completion is explicitly tracked at the reservation level.

When guests accept rules individually and attest with their name, expectations are clearer before arrival. This reduces misunderstandings around noise, parties, parking, occupancy, and other common problem areas.

Each completed pre-check produces a structured record showing what rules were accepted and when. This gives hosts clearer documentation when issues arise.

Managers and staff can quickly see whether house rules are complete or pending without searching messages or files. This is especially useful for multi-property and team-based operations.

What Gets Captured

Each completed House Rules Pre-Check includes:

  • Accepted rules with timestamps

  • Final attestation text and typed guest name

  • Electronic consent acceptance and consent version

  • Metadata (IP address, user agent, language, URL)

  • A canonical acknowledgement payload

  • A SHA-256 hash of the payload for integrity

This creates a consistent, audit-oriented record tied to the reservation.

  • Write rules that are specific and unambiguous

  • Use penalties carefully and explain them clearly

  • Customize the final attestation to fit the property

  • Keep the tone firm, clear, and guest-friendly

We’re excited to launch our new REST API (v1) so you can programmatically access your guidebooks. Here’s what’s available today and how to get started.

Authentication

  • Use Bearer Authorization with your generated access token.
  • All endpoints are throttled under the api rate limit of 60 requests per minute.

Base URL

  • Prefix: /api/v1

Endpoints (current release)

  1. List guidebooks
    • GET /api/v1/{account}/guidebooks
    • Returns all guidebooks for the specified account.
  2. Get a guidebook
    • GET /api/v1/{account}/guidebooks/{guidebook}
    • Returns a single guidebook by ID for the specified account.

Quick usage example

Custom Branding + Smarter Guest Pre-checks

We’ve been hard at work building features to give you more control, flexibility, and professionalism in how you run your short-term rentals. We’ve rolled out two exciting updates:

White Labeling

  • Upload your own logo (Included for everyone)
  • Use a custom domain for guidebooks (e.g. guest.yourbrand.com) (Available as a paid add-on)
  • Your branding shows up in the app and in the guidebook footer. The footer logo will also link to your website if you have one set.

  • Collect guest IDs securely
  • Capture newsletter sign-ups
  • Still includes waivers
  • New display settings allow you to conditionally display a pre-check depending on reservation source like Airbnb or Direct. (Requires PMS integration)

Welcora V2 is Live

Thank you so much for your patience as we are finally live with Welcora V2!

We’re working hard to make sure there are no additional bugs or issues so please let us know if you run across anything strange.

V1 will remain in place until July 1st as a reference and will serve in a read only mode. Any content changes should take place in V2 now.

You can access the new platform at https://app.welcora.com/login

Guests will start being redirected to V2 guidebooks today (5/7/25). Nothing on your end should need to be updated. QR codes and signs will continue working and will be redirected to the new guidebooks as will any links.

Lots of updates will be coming soon including tutorials and walkthroughs.

P.S. If you are currently using upsells with credit card payments through Stripe, that feature is still in development but will be coming very shortly. In the meantime payments need to be collected manually.

Welcora Version 2 is Coming Soon

We’ve been quiet here at Welcora getting ready for a major upgrade to our software. It’s finally time to let you know about it!
